The Nadder Oil Buying Club (NOBC) has existed since 2011 to source heating oil as cheaply and easily as possible for those living in the Salisbury /Shaftesbury area.
The club comprises 1,200 or so members with over 1,400 tanks and in 2024, we purchased 1.5 million litres of oil, on behalf of members, and were consistently extremely competitive, since the suppliers find our quite tight delivery area keeps their transport costs down.
How does it work?
The way the system works is fairly straightforward. Twice a month we send you an email asking if you need oil for delivery either by the middle or end of the month. If you don’t need oil, just ignore the email and opt out of subsequent reminders for this order. If you need oil, submit the amount you need within the time specified and you will then receive an acknowledgement.
After the specified date, we negotiate with the oil companies and you then receive an email saying by when the delivery will take place and at what price. If within twenty four hours of receiving the order confirmation, you find that you can buy better, just drop us an email and your order will be cancelled.
You pay the supplier direct on receipt of invoice. The supplier is selected based on the value offered including the service they provide to club members. We enjoy very good relationships with a number of local suppliers.
There are no fees or subscriptions - membership is free. The club is operated by Richard Willan who acts as manager /administrator.
Oil Prices
The year 2024 started with heating oil prices through NOBC being around the 70ppl + 5% VAT mark. Despite all the geopolitical instability this year the heating oil price dropped to and remained at around 55-56ppl + 5% VAT level throughout the second half of the year.
It’s not possible to predict where prices will move from here. Domestic oil pricing reflects seasonal influences as well as global market movements, hence winter pricing tends to be higher*.
Club savings arise from lower delivery and streamlined administration costs for the suppliers, passed on through lower prices and fewer tankers on our roads.

Advice
One tip which I try to emphasise as much as possible is ‘keep your tank topped up’. This is particularly important in the winter months when a supply glitch or cold weather can suddenly see your tank level dropping more quickly than normal. Suppliers, not surprisingly, charge much more for emergency short notice deliveries.
Another point to remember is that the suppliers’ insurance companies are insisting that tanker drivers do not deliver to faulty tanks or to tanks where a visual check of the tanks soundness cannot be made.
Finally, suppliers invoices must normally be paid within 7 days of delivery to benefit from the competitive price quoted.
